THE CHALLENGE
What happens when project information lives in too many places? In many hybrid teams, work is scattered across tools like Slack, Google Docs, and task managers. As teams move between platforms to find updates or share progress, collaboration becomes fragmented and visibility into projects slowly start to fade as time goes on.
The challenge was designing a course that not only teaches Notion as a collaboration tool but also supports learners through the entire adoption process from initial awareness to post-course application.
THE STRATEGY
Before designing the course itself, I mapped the entire learner experience to better understand where friction, confusion, and disengagement might occur.
Using UX-informed instructional design methods, I created a learner journey map that tracked how participants would move from initial awareness of the course through post-course application in their teams.
The goal was to design learning support systems that extend beyond the course and encourage long-term adoption of Notion as a collaboration platform.
THE ARTIFACT
The learner journey map visualizes the end-to-end experience of a participant in the course.
The map follows the learner across key stages:
-
Discovery
-
Exploration
-
Registration
-
Orientation
-
Course Engagement
-
Application
-
Completion
-
Post-Course Engagement
At each stage, the map highlights:
-
Key touch points in the learning experience
-
Learner emotions and thoughts
-
Friction points that may disrupt progress
-
Design opportunities to improve engagement and clarity
By visualizing the learner experience entirely, the map helps identify where targeted learning supports are needed.
DESIGN DECISIONS
Several key design decisions emerged from the journey mapping process.
Each Clarity of Course Value
-
Learners often questioned whether the course would be relevant to their role. To address this, the design introduced preview content and role-specific examples.
Guided Onboarding
-
Confusion during orientation highlighted the need for onboarding walkthroughs and sandbox tutorials for using Notion templates.
Peer Support Systems
-
Slack channels and optional peer feedback were integrated to support collaboration and sustain engagement throughout the course.
Post-Course Reinforcement
-
To prevent drop-off after completion, the design included alumni channels, project showcases, and ongoing template updates.
IMPACT
This artifact demonstrates my ability to design learning experiences beyond individual modules by considering the entire learner ecosystem.
By identifying friction points across the learner lifecycle, the map informed design decisions that support sustained learner engagement and real-world application of collaboration workflows.
Designing the learner journey map reinforced that effective professional learning extends beyond course content.
Learners must first discover the value of a course, feel supported during onboarding, and have opportunities to apply new skills within their real work environments.
Mapping the learner experience helped ensure the course design addressed not only instructional objectives, but also the emotional and behavioral factors that influence long-term learning adoption.
